Coming Soon to a Repository near You: “Basics of Archives”

“Basics of Archives,” a practical, one-day workshop for those who work with historical records but have little or no archival training, will be presented at Columbus-Lowndes Public Library at 314 North Seventh Street in Columbus, MS, on February 9, 2009. Mona Vance, Archivist in the library’s The Buckley Genealogy Room and The Billups-Garth Archives, will lead this all-day workshop. It will run from 9:00 – 4:00. Participants will learn what makes historical records historical; how to take care of historical records so they can be used in the next century; how to protect historical collections from theft and destruction; where to learn more about caring for historical records, and much, much more.

The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library is sponsoring the workshop in collaboration with the Mid-Gulf Coast Continuing Education for Archivists Collaborative (MGCCEAC). This weirdly-named collaborative includes the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and the Louisiana Archives and Manuscripts Association. As a collaborative effort they are developing a way to provide a sustainable program of good, convenient, and inexpensive continuing education opportunities for keepers of the historical record in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. The MGCCEAC is supported by a three-year grant from the Institute for Library and Museum Services, a federal funding agency. The collaborative will offer frequent workshops throughout MS, AL, and LA.

The “Basics of Archives” workshop consists of both lecture-based and computer-based lessons. Registration includes a workbook, a CD containing the computer-based lessons, and a box lunch.

To register, send your contact information and a check (payable to the Society of Mississippi Archivists) for $30 to Columbus Basics of Archives, c/o Shugana Williams, Society of Mississippi Archivists Treasurer, Katrina Research Center, The University of Southern Mississippi, 730 East Beach Blvd, Long Beach, MS 39560. There is limited seating, and registration closes on February 1. For more information, contact Elizabeth H. Dow, MGCCEAC Coordinator, at or (225) 578-3158.
