Archives Workshop in Montgomery, Alabama on July 16, 2010

A workshop is being offered on July 16, 2010, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History in Montgomery, Alabama.

The focus of the workshop will be on arranging, describing and preserving archival collections at historical societies, genealogical collections, libraries, church archives, county archives, municipal archives, or any other institution that does not have full-time trained archival staff, or where the staff would like some additional training in arrangement, description and basic preservation skills.

Everyone is welcome.

As a participant in this one-day workshop you will learn to identify and list what you have, how much you have, organize your collections, perform basic preservation on records that need it, and make those records accessible to those who want to use them.

This workshop highlights hands-on activities and readings to illustrate the methods for processing archival collections. Lunch and resources will be provided.

This workshop will be divided into four parts: 1) Determining the origins of the collections to the best of your ability 2) Arranging collections effectively 3) Preserving records as effectively as possible 4) Describing records so that researchers can find them.
