2010 Archival Workshops in Mississippi

Archival Processing

This workshop, taught by Mona Vance (Columbus-Lowndes Public Library) and Ryan Semmes (MSU), will focus on arrangement, description, and preservation of historical materials in small to mid-size institutions and public libraries. It will be held in Columbus on August 24, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with sign-in beginning at 8:30 a.m., at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. $30 (includes lunch)

Basic Archives

Taught by Leigh McWhite (UM) and Jennifer Ford (UM), this workshop will provide essential information about collection acquisition, evaluation, processing, preservation, and access for small to mid-size repositories with historical materials. The workshop will be held at the William Winter Archives and History Building in Jackson on September 7, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with sign-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. $30 (includes lunch)

NEW:     Documenting Communities and Organizations

This workshop is for libraries, archives, and historical organizations that preserve and provide access to materials documenting community organizations, such as records, scrapbooks, artifacts, and photographs. The focus will be on active collection of historical materials in collaboration with these organizations and will cover the evaluation, processing and preservation of materials. Diane Ross (USM), Shugana Williams (USM), and Emily Erwin (DSU) will teach the workshop, which will be held at the William Winter Archives and History Building in Jackson on October 8, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with sign-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. $30 (includes lunch)

NEW:      Preservation of Books & Archival Materials

Offered as a pre-conference workshop at the Mississippi Library Association’s annual conference, this workshop will focus on the preservation of books and a variety of archival materials. Jennifer Brannock (USM) and Linda Overman (private conservator) will teach the workshop in Vicksburg, on October 19, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with sign-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. For more information contact the Mississippi Library Association at info@misslib.org or go to the website at www.misslib.org.

NEW:      Archival Digitization: Practical Solutions on a Budget

In response to frequent requests, a workshop providing an overview of digitization will be taught by Jason Kovari (UM) and Pamela Williamson (UM). Included will be preservation and access, creating metadata and following copyright standards, long-term storage practices, review of various content management systems, and comparison of in-house digitization and out-sourcing. The class, which will also help to identify feasible participant digitization projects based on institutional capacity, will be held in Jackson at the William Winter Archives and History Building on November 9, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with sign-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. $30 (includes lunch)

Pre-registration is required; there will be no on-site registration.
