Index Completed for Mississippi Section of the Southern Business Directory, 1854

Announcing the completion of another index in the Billups-Garth Archives!  Introducing the Index to The Southern Business Directory and General Commercial Advertiser, 1854.

Excerpts only on Mississippi were printed from the entire directory and bound for the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library in 2008. 

Counties included are: Adams, Attala, Bolivar, Carroll, Choctaw, Claiborne, Clark, Coahoma, Covington, Copiah, DeSoto, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Jones, LaFayette, Lowndes, Leake, Madison, Panola, Pike, Scott, Tishomingo, Tippah, and Winston.

Information contained in the directory varies by county.  Lowndes County has the largest section for Mississippi with a two and half page history of the county followed by a list of prominant citizens, businesses, churches, organizations, schools, hotels, and so on. 

Lowndes County businesses include grocers, druggists, merchant tailors, dentists, confectioners, florists, and auctioners.  The directory also lists names such as Billups, Oscar T. Keeler, Hopkins, Hiram T. Sherrill, Eckford, Pope, Eggleston, and many more.
