Index to the Mercantile and General City Directory, 1873

The Billups-Garth Archives is pleased to announce the completion of the Index for the 1873 Mercantile and General City Directory for Columbus, Mississippi!

The Index captures over 40 pages of numerous businesses, organizations, publications, and histories of the city of Columbus.

Names include Billups, Atwater, Abert, Cox, Gaston, Harris, Lee, Mitchell, Moore, Pope, Sykes, Westmoreland, and many more.

Many well known facilities such as the Columbus Female Institute (now Mississippi University for Women or MUW), but also many organizations that have been long forgotten such as Columbus and Lowndes County Medical Society, the Institute for the Blind (Mississippi), the Lunatic Asylum (Jackson, Mississippi), the Washington Vineyard, and the Unity for the Daughters of Rebekah Lodge, No. 2 (Independent Order of Odd Fellows female organization).

This will be a huge help for all of our patrons especially those students working on the “Tales from the Crypt” project through the Mississippi School for Math and Science as well as MUW history classes.

A copy of the Index is located in the Local History Room at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library with the call number “CL 976.209 Lowndes Col 1873 Index”.

You may also view an online version of the Index at the Lowndes County, Mississippi History and Genealogy website found at http://lowndes.msghn.org. Simply click on “What’s New???” in the center of the webpage.
