The Magnolia Bowl and Junkyard Cars?

This image shows both the Magnolia Bowl and the Franklin Academy building (built 1886).  When the Magnolia Bowl was built in 1933, a valley was filled in with 25 feet of dirt and 40 old automobiles in order to create the field and stands.

The playing field at Magnolia Bowl was renamed Willie B. Saunders Field on October 1, 1976.  Saunders was coach at Stephen D. Lee High School and arranged for the creation of the Bowl. The Magnolia Bowl witnessed its last official high school football game when the Columbus Falcons played on October 30, 1998.

This photograph is found in the Local History Departments Photograph Collection under LH300.
