Cherokee Garden Club Scarpbooks donated to Archives

Last week, the Cherokee Garden Club donated four scrapbooks to the Billups-Garth Archives.  The scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs, awards, invitations, and more all relating to the numerous events and projects carried out by the club. The scrapbooks range in dates from the 1950s through to the 2000s.

The Cherokee Garden Club was organized in the Spring of 1951 with the objective to stimulate interest in and a knowledge of the different forms of gardening, particularly the building of private gardens and the general improvement of home grounds; and to promote a general civic improvements in this community and its environs.

Seen here are Mrs. W. L. Puckett, general chairman of the tour plans, and Mrs. H. E. Carter, publicity chairman, decorating the lamp post at the Duke Home for the second annual Tour of Holiday Homes in December 1953.  The home, located at 711 North Fourth Avenue, belonged to Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Duke.
