Lowndes County Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, the Local History Department at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library would like to highlight the service of a Lowndes County World War I veteran.

First Lieutenant Samuel Kaye, Jr. poses beside his plane during World War I.
First Lieutenant Samuel Kaye, Jr. fought in France with the 94th Aero Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group of the United States Army Air Service in the American Expeditionary Forces Division.

The Squadron’s nickname was “Hat-in-the Ring” as indicated by the painting on the side of Kaye’s plane.

He is credited with four aerial victories and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, and the French Croix de Guerre for his service and gallantry in action.

In 2007, the Columbus Air Force Base theater was renamed the Kaye Auditorium in his honor.

Kaye is just one of many veterans from Lowndes County.

Local veterans can add their stories to the Billups-Garth Archives so that future generations remember their sacrifices and contributions!

Happy Veterans Day!
