Local student learns about being an Archivist

Archivist Mona Vance and Heritage Academy student Joanna stand in front of the CWRPP Archives.

While in high school, students must begin thinking about what career path they would like to choose.  Very few students, however, get the opportunity to check it out before going to college.

One local student, Joanna, is doing just that!  Joanna is interested in the public history field which includes museums, historic preservation, and archiving.

As part of a job shadowing program through Heritage Academy, Joanna has the opportunity to work with archivist Mona Vance in the Local History Department at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library.

She is exploring the many ways in which the staff of the Local History Department assist patrons with their research as well as how students such as those from the Mississippi School for Math and Science “Tales from the Crypt” utilize the resources available at the archives for their research projects.

She is also learning what happens to a collection when it is donated to the archives.  Joanna has been introduced to terms such as “processing”, “mylar”, and “acid free”.  She has looked at glass plate negatives, photographs, court files from the 1840s, and much more.

Recently, Joanna and Vance traveled to Mississippi University for Women (MUW) to explore the collections at the Center for Women’s Research and Public Policy (CWRPP).  Dr. Bridget Pieschel, director of the CWRPP, guided us through the exciting work being done to preserve the history of MUW.  Dr. Pieschel has enlisted the help of students to scan and digitize school annuals, newspapers, and other various items in order to make them more accessible.

You can search the materials available at the CWRPP online at http://web2.muw.edu/index.php/en/womens-research-resources.html.

Joanna’s next visit will be to the Stephen D. Lee Home and Museum to learn the history and operations of a house museum.
