Marcella Billups and her service in World War II

March is Women’s History Month and in celebration, the Local History Announcements blog will highlight the lives and accomplishments of Lowndes County women.

Marcella Billups

A division of the Navy during World War II, the WAVES stood for “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services”. A year after it was created, Marcella Billups, seen here in her officer uniform, joined the organization on February 9, 1943. She served three years and while on duty she was stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana and Jacksonville, Florida.
