Archives working with USM practicum student

The Local History Department at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library has been working with Donna Ballard for the last month as part of her practicum course.  Donna is completing a Graduate Certificate in Archives and Special Collections through the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Library and Information Science.

As part of Donna’s 120 hours with us, she is learning how to process a collection, create a finding aid, index, methods of preservation, and much more. She is becoming familiar with Deeds of Gift, Accession Records, and control files.

Donna’s first collection is MS 451 Caldwell High School Slides, 1975-1981. So far, she has placed over 140 slides into protective sleeves inside an acid free binder as well as numbered and scanned each one.  The scans will then be printed in order to make viewing the images much easier for patrons.  This will also help preserve the original slides by minimizing their use.

The slides show basketball games, the Junior ROTC, students marching on the field at the Magnolia Bowl, the flag corps, dances, gatherings, trips to a Space Center and museum (possibly the Marshall Space Flight Center in Hunstville, Alabama), and more.

One of Donna’s goals is to identify the students in the photographs.  If you were, or know of someone who was, a student at Caldwell in the 1970s-80s we welcome your assistance in putting names to the individuals in the roughly 140  photographs!

Here are just a few examples:

More to come about other projects that Donna is working on!

Donna Ballard is the District Library Director for East Mississippi Community College.
