Eight O May Celebration 2012

Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 8th, Voices in Harmony, the Mississippi School for Math and Science student-directed Gospel Choir is planning an 8th of May Emancipation Celebration history program in Sandfield Cemetery in Columbus.

All are invited!

The 8th of May is the historic Emancipation Day in Columbus and Lowndes County. On May 8, 1865, Union troops arrived in Columbus, effectively ending slavery in the area. The day was celebrated for over a century in the African American community in Columbus and the surrounding area.

The VIH program will combine music and historic vignettes relating significant events and individuals from local African American History.

Performance times for the free program are 5:30 and 6:30. Each performance will last approximately 30-35 minutes.

Come on out if you are in the area!

There was a nice article in Sunday’s Columbus Commercial Dispatch newspaper.
