Interns in the Local History Department

The Local History Department is pleased to have several interns from Mississippi University for Women working in the archives this summer.

The students are working on various projects such as digitization and the processing of collections.

One intern, Jaleesa, is working on digitizing the Lowndes County Postcards.  Images include the Gilmer Hotel (both interior and exterior shots), Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi University for Women),  and the Lowndes County Courthouse.

Jaleesa is also working on processing the Susie Shelton Papers.  The collection includes research that Shelton has done into the African American community here in Lowndes County as well as family photographs and obituaries.

J. Mathew is another one of our interns.  He is working to organize the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library Collection.  The collection consists of over six boxes and growing.  There are a multitude of various material types in the collection including photographs, slides, documents, flyers, newspaper articles, floppy disks, scrapbooks, and more!

The collection documents the developement of the county library system since the 1930s.

Also, the 40th anniversary of the opening of the main branch in Columbus (or the Chebie Bateman Building) is next year in 2013.  Our goal is to have the collection processed in time for the anniversary in order to utilize various materials from the collection for programs or displays during the 2013 celebration.

The third intern working in the Local History Department this summer is Rei.  Rei is focusing on scanning and digitizing the county school annuals for future inclusion on the Mississippi Digital Library through the University of Southern Mississippi (  So far, she has scanned books for Joe Cook Junior High School and Hunt Junior High School.
