Two postcards donated to the Archives

The newest postcards added to the Lowndes County Postcard Collection (MS 232) showcase a local business and a long-time educational institution.

The first postcard is of the Columbus Tourist Court from around 1947.  Located at 2400 Second Avenue North on Highway 82 East, the motel was owned and operated by Warner E. and Judith Holland.  The motel boasted twenty-three modern cottages, Panelray vented gas heaters, and large ventilating fans in each room.

The second postcard is of the Industrial Institute and College (Mississippi University for Women) from around 1910. On the back of the card is an advertisement for the cards creator, The Rotograph Company from New York City.  The company specialized in making postcards from personal or business photographs. They charged $5.00 for 1,000 cards on any one subject requiring either a 5″ x 7″ or 6 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ photograph. In 1911, The Rotograph Company changed its name to the Illustrated Postal Card & Novelty Co.
